The Day the Journey Began

Well, this morning, I made possibly the biggest decision of my life. I'm going to thru walk across the United States of America.

My dog, Chewie, and I will put shoes on our feet and begin a journey that will change us both forever. I've spent years thinking about a journey like this. I've considered the Appalachian Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail, the long trek up the coast of California from Mexico to Canada. They all offer a great experience but all of them fall short of one thing. That is seeing the United States in its entirety. Seeing both oceans. Seeing both mountain ranges. Experiencing the length and greatness of the Great Plains and the long cold desert nights.

So, which trail have I decided upon? This naturally felt like the first step for me. It determines when I need to leave, what gear I will need to bring, what obstacles I need to prepare for.

Upon my in depth (you know, or just one Google search) research on the Internet, I came across the obvious American Discovery Trail. Here's an image for reference:

Immediately, this trail seemed enticing. Straight across our great states. However, there were definitely some elements I immediately felt were missing. I didn't get to go through my favorite place in the world, Chattanooga. Additionally, if I intend to leave in mid-July (which I do) then it gives me no chance at seeing the amazing solar eclipse to cross the U.S. on August 21st. The map of THAT path is here:

(Since I'm doing this entry on my phone, it looks like the whole map isn't showing. I'll have to review this on a computer later to verify whether it does or not.)

Anyway, this seemed very enticing. Upon further review of this trek, however, I noticed I would end up on roads and highways instead of trails like I'd prefer. With that said, I've decided to modify both a  bit. So, I will start in Charleston, SC. This is a city I've always wanted to visit and probably a great way to start my journey. There are trails that lead straight to Chattanooga from there and stay in line with the solar eclipse.

Ideally, my dear husband will meet me in Chattanooga for a day in the solar eclipse and our anniversary. Past that, I'll head towards St. Louis, which you can see in the first map with get me back on the ADT. Wonderful! It'll be trails west to Colorado. There it will get tricky again. The ADT crosses paths in Colorado with the Continental Divide Trail here:

I'll pick up this trail and head north to Yellowstone Nationnal Park. From there, I'll cross Idaho and into Portland for my grand finish.

Now on to my pack and cart, supplies, food and everything Chewbacca. Until then.
